Detours w/ Roads

28 Oct. 2018 – 23 Sept. 2023 | Bristol, UK

A roundabout route through the music we love, from dub to grime, via post-punk, house, techno and ambient.

After four years of running Roads, our monthly daytime events at Rye Wax in Peckham, we take to the waves, for a spin-off radio show every other month on Noods Radio in Bristol. With the original founders having scattered across the country during the pandemic, it is a good excuse to meet up regularly and share the music we’ve been feeling over the previous months. Detours is a roundabout route through the music we love, from dub to grime, via post-punk, house, techno and ambient. We are sometimes live in the studio, pint of Guinness in hand, friends swinging by for a catch up. Other times all or some of us are beamed in from London, Cardiff or West Wales for pre-recorded sections musing on pandemic life, hibernation, morning commutes, surreal and dreamlike politics, summer sun, Andrew Weatherall tributes and the cinematic drama of Rome. Creating the artwork provides an opportunity to cut loose and learn something new in the process. Sometimes the artwork inspires the theme for the show, and sometimes it supports a pre-agreed theme. I use Cinema 4D to create static and animated content with the purpose of engaging people to linger long enough to catch the show details. Compared to the black and white event artwork for Roads (our daytime event series, from which the radio show was born), the show artwork is designed to be rich and often colourful, adapting the scene and materials to create different visuals for before, during and after the transmission.

Music event

01 Oct. 2016 29 Feb. 2020 | 30 Events | London, UK

Extended daytime sessions with some of our favourite selectors playing records together over a few pints. Expect some of the upstarts, established faces and unsung purveyors of the UK underground.

We start Roads in 2016 – four friends with Bristol connections – looking to create something regular in south-east London. It’s a free daytime music event on a Saturday. For us, it’s about making a commitment once a month to meet, invite someone along that we haven’t seen for a while to come and play, have a pint and a catch up. We want it to feel easy and open, with the potential for a community to develop around it. We run it until 2020, totalling 30 events.
