Music Event
Boundary Object
03 Oct. 2010 – 05 Oct. 2014 | 44 Events | Bristol, UK
In keeping with Bristol’s long-running tradition of underground music events, Boundary Object exists to provide an opportunity for some of the key protagonists of the scene to play a selection of personal favourites in good company at a decent pub.
Born out of a desire for collaboration with a friend, Boundary Object is a free monthly daytime music event on a Sunday. In keeping with Bristol's long running tradition of underground music events, it exists to provide an opportunity for some of the key protagonists of the scene to play a selection of personal favourites in good company at a decent pub. Starting in 2010, we run it for four years, the first Sunday of the month, totaling 44 events. The Bell pub in Stokes Croft (then in its heyday) forms the ever-reliable and low-key backdrop to a heavy roster of guests, most of the time sit-down-DJing on an old church pew. We make use of Bristol’s healthy events schedule to invite guests, both local and those who might already be in town for gigs, providing a place for them to catch up with mates and peers, and to decompress from the night before. Subsequent guests are often invited for the next month whilst in attendance at the event; the best way to demonstrate what to expect. There is the occasional ‘special’ event or birthday celebration. We are proud of the unexpected and fruitful pairings and collaborations which emerge and how the event takes on a life of its own. As hosts we gradually disappear into the background as the event becomes the social space we intended it to be, providing something meaningful and needed to some of the most sought-after guests in the UK underground dance music scene at the time. We print one poster to display in the venue. I want to make something that stands out from other event posters around the city, but it also needs to be practical. As we often only finalise the events at short notice, a dynamic template design means we can get the information out quickly, while developing and projecting a unique visual style that is coherent as a set, and stands out in a wall of other posters. A circle (representing the venn diagram concept of the ‘boundary object’ name, but also condensation rings on a pub table) is flexed according to the length of the event information. This provides enough difference from one event to the next whilst the repetition builds up a unified series.

Radio
28 Oct. 2018 – 23 Sept. 2023 | Bristol, UK
A roundabout route through the music we love, from dub to grime, via post-punk, house, techno and ambient.
After four years of running Roads, our monthly daytime events at Rye Wax in Peckham, we take to the waves, for a spin-off radio show every other month on Noods Radio in Bristol. With the original founders having scattered across the country during the pandemic, it is a good excuse to meet up regularly and share the music we’ve been feeling over the previous months.

Music event
01 Oct. 2016 – 29 Feb. 2020 | 30 Events | London, UK
Extended daytime sessions with some of our favourite selectors playing records together over a few pints. Expect some of the upstarts, established faces and unsung purveyors of the UK underground.
We start Roads in 2016 – four friends with Bristol connections – looking to create something regular in south-east London. It’s a free daytime music event on a Saturday. For us, it’s about making a commitment once a month to meet, invite someone along that we haven’t seen for a while to come and play, have a pint and a catch up. We want it to feel easy and open, with the potential for a community to develop around it. We run it until 2020, totalling 30 events.
